News Archive. 2016
12/31/2016 — 01/01/2017
Dear friends! We congratulate you with the New Year! Year of 2016 had gone, and it had its bads and goods, it was sad and funny,
full of good and bad news. We wish all of you that new 2017 year to bring you joy, health, happiness. And of course — a lot of
interesting and Phantom-ish! We thank you that you were with us the last year. Believe us, you support is an invaluable help to us!
With this update we are going to bring to a close all incompletes of past years. And today we start with
Jennifer Linforth trilogy. As you can remember (or not) this writer
published three books in Madrigal series. On the special page
we will tell you about the last book in series, Rondo. Attention! Spoilers alert! As usual! Also we updated the page
about Linforth who changed her nickname.
Also we finally share with you synopsis of crime mystery of 1988 year, no joke! Phantom
of the Soap Opera is a story which has a little with the Phantom of the Opera itself. But in general it is pretty
little old school crime mystery.
And as a dessert — New Year, you know, celebration, masquerade… — we present you a very
special page. Here you can find the Phantom masks.
We mean, masks of Erik, according to the original Gaston Leroux novel. We tell you all.
Happy New Year!
Dear friends! Congratulation to all of you who celebrate Christmas today! We wish you all the joy and cheering!
Old good tradition of our site is on Christmas to immerse oneself in the atmosphere of
Beauty and the Beast fairytale. Especially we are
pleased to update our site shortly before a new movie based on Disney animated film to be released. Today we suggest you
to read an essay. Why it is widely accepted that the Phantom of the Opera is based on the story about Beauty who felt
in love with the Beast? We try to answer this question in this essay.
After long absence of any news, now we've got information about French version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's the Phantom of the Opera.
This Friday Stage Entertainment France and Mogador Theatre administration officially announced about project closing.
The Phantom of the Opera will be replaced by Grease.
Magnitude of accident when props and costumes were damaged is still unknown, so we Phantom fans have a hope that in
year or two we will hear the musical in French. We hope sincerely it will be true.
Dear friends! Today is not JUST a birthday of the most famous stage version of the Phantom of the Opera. Today is its milestone
birthday! Magnifical date, 30 years! We believe this triumphant march is continuing, lots of anniversaries and records are in
the future. And today let's remember how it all started.
This is about The first year backstage Her Majesty's Theatre London
1986-1987 by Marcus Tylor. He was full-time photographer of Her Majesty Theatre and personal
assistant of Steve Barton when the Phantom of the Opera was presented to the audience. In his book Taylor published rare backstage
pictures during the first year of production. We updated information and added Laruno's review of the new edition
of this book.
Also we continue to publish information about Russian stage version. Now we completed the
page with video. Here you can watch promotional clips,
footage, interviews and mass media reports. Also there are videos made by artists backstage.
As a bolt from the blue, sad news came from Paris. In less than three weeks the Phantom of the Opera — the first time in France! — is
scheduled. The fire started in basement, so props and costumes (some of them had been taken from Moscow production after its
closing in April) were damaged. One of firemen was slightly injured, no more injuries.
Damage is to be judged. But it is clear that repair works will take a long period. French office of Stage Entertainment said
it in short that the premier night was postponed until next year, no dates specified.
Today we continue to post materials about Russian stage version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's
The Phantom of the Opera. After the closing night
the official site of the show was also closed. So now it is our responsibility to collect and save all materials more
or less related to Russian Phantom of the Opera. So in future still many updates are awaiting for you.
Today we renovated and fully updated the special page
about Russian cast included all updates from the second season. Also we suggest you to read about the famous Broadway
producer and director Harold Prince's visit to Moscow on the
special page. And more, review page is also
updated with the most interesting comments about the second season.
Not by the Phantom alone... in other word, today we suggest you to think of other works by Gaston Leroux. Two summer months are gone,
August has come, but many more sunny days await us, and we can spend them with a book written by our favorite writer. Leroux wrote
a lot of books in different genres, like crime stories, fantasies, spy novels, reports, articles and theatre plays... Today we revised
full list of his works and added books translated into Russian. So here we are — full
But wait a minute! How about well-known Wax Museum? And The real Opera Ghost? I'm sure they were here! Answers to
these question you will find on the special page with reader
comments. You will find some interesting facts you never knew.
Today we suggest you to remember one more time about the sequel of The Phantom of the Opera by Webber — Love Never Dies,
better to say Liebe Stirbt Nie, because we are talking about German version.
Our special reporter rosemarycountess was in Hamburg recently and brought us her impressions — you can
read her review of the show.
Summer is a happy season of vacation, sun, heat and good mood. Today we have a rest reading and playing computer game.
At first, do you remember Charles David Stephens' trilogy The
Angel of Music? It is a rare treasure in our fandom — a male writer. His trilogy has its strong and weak features,
but everyone who loves modern retelling can read it unafraid. We have already told you about two books of this series, and now
it's time for the last one. Here you can read the full synopsis.
For those who prefer playing computer games — we suggest to look at a new release of our old good friends Big Fish Games.
They must be great Phantom fans because game after game they use strong elements from this story. Meet Paxton Creek Avengers,
it is 10th game in a Mystery Trackers series. Here we can see a criminal who uses Phantom identity, girl kidnapping during
the performance at the theatre, fire at Opera House, underground lake with evil base on its shore — simply all details of every
fan's dream. You can read synopsis and see the screenshots on the special page.
Let's have some fun! At first, we can watch a couple of TV shows almost forgotten now. Contestants don't forget about the
Phantom and time to time bring their vocal numbers on air. Two episodes demonstrate how you should and should NOT sing
The Phantom of the Opera arias. But of course this is just our private point of view.
So the first show is Golos (the Voice). Yes, one more time. In October of the last year two vet performers
Elena Minina and Aleksandr Postolenko demonstrated romance duet All I Ask Of You.
Pros and contras you can read on the special page.
And another performing was broadcasted in January — in American Idol show. At first selection round young singer
Dalton Rapattoni win hearts of judges by his rock (he calls it rock) cover of the main composition of
Webber's musical. You can read about it on the special page.
And the cherry on top of our today's update. It's Prince of Conjurers by Laurie L. Bolanos.
This is the story of the Phantom of the Opera you've never met. Voodoo magic, reincarnation, time travelling and lots
more — amazing, exciting and quite well-written story with 450 (!) pages of length. Don't be too lazy to open the
page with synopsis — surprise at least is guaranteed.
This year June is not yet as hot as it should be. So to heat summer vacations we work at pages for kids again.
Today we will read comic and watch cartoon.
Canadian cartoon series about Jacob Two Two is not well known outside its Fatherland. But in season three there is
Jacob Two Two and the Dangerous Debut episode where the Phantom is sabotaging — as usual in cartoons — the show.
Please visit the special page to know more about
Jacob and how he got his nickname, and also to read the full synopsis and see screenshots of this episode.
And now something really interesting. During World War II in the USA comics about Miss Victory (busty blonde with
Superman-like power) appeared. In 1944 Miss Victory Meets Noric — the Maniac of the Opera story was published.
Maniac named Noric hiding in Opera cellars where he constructed mirror labyrinth and lots of secret tunnels. He focused on
his own goals Miss Victory must reveal. Notice the published date. It seems this is the first comic based on the Phantom
of the Opera story! All information about it you can find on the special
Dear friends! Today is the first summer day and we congratulate you with start of school vacations and with the Children Day!
Today's update is for kids.
A year ago we told you about easy-going dog named Scooby-Doo and how he and his friends met the Phantom of the Opera in his
various interpretations. Today we added two more books to the Scooby-Doo's
page. The first is a coloring book for preschoolers, here the Phantom decides to attend a fashion show. Please welcome
The Fashion Phantom!
The second book is Scooby-Doo in The Phantom of the Opal!
comics where the Phantom tries to sabotage TV show by dropping the stage lights on the host’s head. Light and warmth to you, friends!
Meanwhile today is Friday, and more, it is Friday, 13. Tell me, friends, did you have any unsuccessful or embarrassing
situations today? In any case, it's time to sit down in a corner and calm down...with a cup of chamomile tea and a book in hands.
We’ve prepared something for you...here I would like to say ‘something delicious’, but alas, if you read a detailed synopsis,
it is unlikely that you will be able to express yourself so kindly. Freddy Krueger
and the Iron Lady by Jack Kent — a novel from the series ‘The Library of Parody and Humor’.
In this Russian (!) book the famous characters played by Robert Englund — Freddy Krueger and Erik Destler — met. The very fiction
you need on Friday, 13.
Dear friends! Congratulations with the Victory Day! This holiday is that very special event we have all rights to be proud of.

Dear friends! Today is Gaston Leroux's birthday. He was literally the father of the Phantom of
the Opera. So lets give a toast (with perfect Tokay) to the rich fantasy of that French journalist and writer
thanks to whom our fandom exists.
As a gift we present you unique possibility to test your feelings and probably to rattle nerves. This makeup
is an homage to two very influential makeups in my life. "The 1925 Lon Chaney Phantom which has always been a
iconic and a favourite makeup of mine. As well as, the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical version", — says Richard
Redlefsen, a professional makeup artist in the film and television industry in Los Angeles. On the
special page you can see this homage professional Phantom make-up.
Today we are glad to tell you about a very interesting event in which you can take part (if you are in Moscow, though).
Two weeks ago Claustrophobia company which organizes reality quests launched the new quest based on the
Phantom of the Opera story. Mysterious disappearing of prima donna, great décor, a lot of special logical
tasks to solve — thats what you can expect if you decide to test your smartness and enjoy a good story and a
company of friends. More information about Claustrophobia, its quests and about Phantom of the Opera quest you can find
on the special page.
And more news for those who is sad about the end of the Phantom of the Opera musical. May 15, in cozy Library
of TsAO Prefecture, meeting event will take place. It will be fan meeting of the Phantom fans. Special guests are three
actors from Russian stage version. Everyone is welcomed!
Christ has risen! Congratulations to everyone who believes in God with the most important Christian holiday.
And today it's the Labour Day, and many of Russians remember demonstrations in honor of this day as well as
Peace! Labour! May brilliant in its innocence. So congratulations with this May Day, too!
Yesturday was a very sad day. The last Moscow show of the Phantom of the Opera was on stage. Memories are still
fresh how we speculated if there would ever be show in Moscow, then excitement and great expectations… And yesterday
it was over, and we past the point of this fairy-tale. Administration of our site visited yesterday the last show,
and now you can read the review on our special page.
So Russian stage version of Webber's musical is closing today. At the moment the last show is on air. The story
of the Phantom's tragic love to young Christine is on stage in MDM Theatre. But we don't say good bye to the
musical: in the nearest future we promise to give you some pages about Russian version, review of the last
show and more. Now you can read some interesting statistic facts of our musical which was given us by Stage
Entertainment. We, in our turn, did our bit, too. You can find it out on our
Spring rose beyond its half, but the weather still hesitates to please us with heat and sunlight. In such times we
should warm our souls with beloved book. For us it's, of course, the Phantom of the Opera. Gaston Leroux wrote it
more than century ago, but nowadays a lot of adaptations appear. Usually text is simplified for language students.
But the best of it is illustrations included into such books. Sometimes it's worth buying the book for its illustrations
only. Today we show you two of them.
First, it's a Korean book for English stuffing. A group of teachers from the USA, Australia, Great Britain worked under
this book. Translation and adaptation are by Louise Benette and David Hwang. Artist
is Cristian Bernardini. This adaptation includes also audiobook read by professional American radio
hosts. No doubt, Koreans took the question of English studying seriously. You can enjoy 40 pictures on the
Second book we've known already. Old good Jennifer Bassett's
adaptation was revised into digital format and published for iPad. The main difference is Martin Cottam's
illustratons, in colour now (which is better for them to be said). You can study them carefully on the
Dear friends, today we present you two books, for kids and for adults, for your choice.
First, The Phantom of the Opera by Lisa Mullarkey. Published in 2010, this children adaptation for preteens
retell the story about the Phantom quite accurate, including episodes rare for kids books — Bukuet and count Phillip's murder,
theatre exploding menace, etc. Illustrations are special, too. Watching them reveals questions to the artist. For example, how
much does he know about anatomy. Meet the book and the pictures on the special
Second, this year's novelty Facade by Kim Carmichael, a modern retelling set in Los Angeles. Nothing special
or intriguing, but in general its quite bearable reading. Full synopsis, as usual, is on the
And notice, that tomorrow there will be Golden Mask Award ceremony. The Phantom of the Opera has three nominations.
We support Dmitry Ermak, Tamara kotova and Mariam Barskaya.
And another piece of news. Internet suggests a rumor, that Love Never Dies will be staged in Budapest. So we're waiting for more
reliable information and report ASAP.
Dear friends! Congratulations with Cosmonautics Day celebrating in Russia! Lets remember that we've got a lot to be proud of!
Passion for space is in our blood!
Modern writers, it seems, are aim at space, too. Or it's hard to explain that large amount of fresh published books 25 items in
three (!) months. In our catalogue there is a huge addition!
You can read the annotation and choose a book to your liking. To be sure, there are some true gems among those books, so even
annotation gives delight. Definitely, per aspera ad astra.
And one more surprise. Please welcome Rick Lai, vet of crossover
literature, who has written several stories already. On the special page
you can read about him and his works. And also one more page Secret Histories: Criminal
Masterminds. It's an interesting, but very controversial variation of Erik's biography.
Dear friends! Today's the April Fools Day, and may be your friends were fooled by you, or may be you've already been a victim.
But today's tradition of our site is not a Fool Day, but selebrating of Lon Chaney Sr.'s Birthday. Famous Man with
a Thousand Faces is 133 years old, ladies and gentlemen.
Today we prepared for you a review of Mir Fantastiki magazines DVD supplement. Year back in April magazine creators included
into this DVD a story about American cinema legend 7-minute video about Lon Chaney and of course his famous Phantom of the Opera.
You can find this story with pictures on the special page.
And one more page: we collected promo photos to 1925 movie which
were used as advertizing material.
Our regular followers have already known Tales of the Shadowmen series started 10 years ago by Jean-Marc & Randy Lofficier.
But if it's the first time you hear about it, let's get acquainted with the series.
Tales of the Shadowmen is an annual collection of short stories in crossover genre where different characters of pulp fiction meet and
interact. These stories are written by quite known writers, some of them are famous and with prestige awards. Each story is a kind of literary
game as if authors compete in intelligence, range of interest, wide reading, and imagination.
The Phantom of the Opera is quite frequent guest in these series. In 7 books we discovered 10 stories about him. You can find full
information on the special page.
Today we present you fresh, 12th in line, collection published in November 2015. There are two short stories at once connected to the
Phantom. The most interesting story is The Tomb of the Veiled Prophet by Rick Lai. You can come to know it on
the special page.

March rised beyond its half, and we urgently need more spring sunshine. So today we will try to bring you a
little warmth from Spain, at least on pages of kid's books.
We'd like to show you two illustrated adaptations for children. And the first is a book published in 2010 by
Lumen company based in Barcelona. This book is the first of all books we've known so far where the artist tried
to picture... Siren who guarded underground lake where Erik used to live! And more, his life in circus as Living
Corpse. More information you will find on our special page.
The second book, it's application for Android, was published recently, November 2015 by Lisbon Labs from Portugal.
Illustrated book with audioguide is bilingual, English and Spanish. It is for very young readers. More detailes
and a lot of pictures you can find on the special page.
Dear ladies! Congratulations with All Women Day, it's warm, kind and Spring-like holiday, so let kindness, smiles,
happiness and sun be in your lives! Love and be loved! Today we've got a day of Indian movies. What's the Indian movie?
It's always love, dance and singing. And if there are some Phantom moments, it's twice better.
First movie is Om Shanti Om. This movie itself is not Phantom-related, but its climactic scene is a true gift
to us, because it's quoting directly The Phantom of the Opera 2004 movie. You will find full information,
synopsis and videoclip with that special scene on our page.
Second Bollywood's movie is Deewangee. It's 3-hour long story which can be divided into two parts. The first
one is not our Phantom-related, but the second art is a true gem for any Phantom fan, because here you can find lots of
reminiscences and allusions. The movie itself was quite interesting, with complex plot and plot twists. More information
and screenshots are here.
News worth the last day of leap month. Sad but true, Stage Entertainment's official
VKontakte group announced this season
to be the last for Moscow Phantom of the Opera show. This anniversary year musical will be performed in France, so
from Moscow it will be relocated in Paris. There are posters around Moscow, telling sad news. If you haven't seen
it yet, it's last chance! Go! Time is limited!
Dear friends! Today in Russia we celebrate Defender of the Fatherland Day. Officially it celebrates those who
are or were serving the army, but unofficially it's the holiday of men in general, as March 8 is the Day of Women.
So holiday can't be a real holiday without concerts. And we've got three of them! And very glorious ones, we promise!
Last Autumn State Kremlin Palace celebrated its first official jubilee — 25 years. Quarter-century is a powerfull matter
to extend celebration. It started in September, and two months later guests were pleased with multi-genre concert where
Gleb Matveychuk and Elmira Kalimullina performed famous duet from The Phantom of
the Opera. You can judge this show on the special page.
A lot of TV-watchers met New Year Eve with Russia-1 TV channel and its Goluboy Ogonek, long-live traditional TV
broadcast, which warms our hearts at this night full of joy. This time we heard famous duet sung by Nikolay
Baskov and Ksenia Dezhneva. It reminded us another time when Nikolay Baskov performed this duet —
opposite Dariga Nazarbayeva (daughter of Kazakhstan Respublic's President). It happened at Alma-Ata
My First Love Festival in 2014. We recommend you to check this concert out, because it was performance not for the
faint-hearted. Find both shows on Baskov's special page on our site.
Happy St Valentine's Day to everyone! We've got a very special tradition: every year on St. Valentine's we update
our site with fresh portion of high rated materials. Today is not an exception. But we truly ask all under-age guys
to switch off, because today's materials are harsh.
Lets begin with our list of XXX movies. We added
three more movies were creators put some Phantom style inside the plot. (What plot in XXX movies BTW?)
• Panting at the Opera: it's
the first known movie in this category. It was shot in 1988. If you know anything older, let us know too!
• Phantom of the Cabaret 2:
the second part of this movie. We told you about the first part, so today you'll know more about this thrilling story.
• The Phantom of the Porn Set: the
lost movie never broadcasted. But we collected all known facts on the page, so you can get an insight into it.
And also we'll show you a book. Frankly speaking we'd found it long ago, but all that time we'd been hesitating
over a choice because of its content. The Phantom called Whisperer is turned to a real sex machine obsessed with B&D.
But OK, we've been always saying we're open-minded. so please welcome The Phantom of the Roxy by Brian Tarsis. On the
special page you'll find information about the
author, synopsis (violent scenes are not detailed) and some of 30 illustrations (the less harmful ones).
But be prepared. And we worn you again. It's 21+!
Today is 11th birthday of our site! It's not a baby anymore, those days when it was small and black and tried its first
steps are gone now. It's a teenager now, and still growing! We are pleased to welcome you to join us in wonderful journey in all-Phantom universe!
Our brave team with Elena di Veneria as a team leader, visited Hamburg this January to see Love Never Dies on stage. We
prepared to hate Liebe Stirbt Nie, but instead we... But shhh! To know more, please open our
special page! For you as always information and interesting facts,
offstage pictures and promos. And —
honest review with tonnes of pictures!
Read and imagine you're in Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg...
Today in Russian Orthodox Church we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus. It's one of the most important holy days.
Also today's Michael Crawford's 74th Birthday. He's great actor and singer, and all of us know what
he did for our Phantom fandom. We wish him new roles, good health and all the best!
And ta-DAM! The news we all have been waiting for a long time! In October we will celebrate 30 years on stage of
Andrew Lloyd Webber's masterpiece. And we will celebrate it in... Paris! Théâtre Mogador will welcome
the musical in the Fall. Tickets will be on sale from the Valentine's Day.
To Paris, dear Phantom fans, to Paris!
Today in Russia we've got the very special holiday, which is unknown in the whole world. It's so-called Old New Year.
As you may — or may not — know, Julian calendar was used as the basis for European calendar in the past. Later it was
replaced by Gregorian calendar. Russia was one of the last countries to convert to this calendar. Some time dual dating
was used in Russia, and now we call it old style calendar. And this Old New Year is not the less than New Year in Julian calendar.
Today we want to show you an extra from Glavkontsert TV concert, broadcasted december 31. Dmitry Ermak and Elena Bakhtiyarova
sang the main duet. On the special page, as usual, you can find video, pictures and full information.
And as funny addition to our update — a new trophy was added to our page with plagiarism. Lots of book covers with the same mask! If you know more, please, let us know!
In Russia, we celebrate Christmas today. So Merry Christmas fellow Phantom fans!
It's our good old tradition to update Beauty and the Beast
pages every Christmas. Let's roll ourselves in a rug with mug of hot gluhwein in one hand, and with teddy-bear under other hand...
and watch the story where beautiful girl makes man from the beast.
We updated the page about lovely Italian-Spanish mini series La Bella e La Bestia.
December 12, 2015 a TV version of this mini series was broadcasted. So we present our
new page with full synopsis and all changes marked with red.
But sometimes the Beast to fight with is not the Beast actually, but inner demons of creative crew of the next movie.
We're talking about Australian-Canadian "masterpiece" broadcasted in 2009 — Beauty and the Beast starring Estella Warren as Beauty.
On the special page you will find full synopsis and screenshots to do justice to it.
And this new year let us start with summarizing! Fresh news about Russian
stage version. In 2 weeks, January 17, it will celebrate 500th perfofmance. Audience will get the special gift, signed poster! Hurry up!
Our page with TV and radio broadcasts is still growing!
Also there are some new articles on the media page:
online interviews with Ivan Ozhogin, Elena Bakhtiyarova, Dmitry Ermak, Ekaterina Lyokhina, Dmitry Bogachev. And printed materials:
• Lyubimaya Dacha with Dmitry Ermak and Natalia Bystrova;
• OK! with them as well;
• HELLO! with sir Andrew Lloyd Webber;
• Turbiznes with Ivan Ozhogin;
• Telek with Elena Bakhtiyarova;
• Otdokhni! with her as well;
• Argumenty i Fakti with Dmitry Bogachev.
And as the cherry on the cake, pony! Two weeks ago in National equestrian park Rus there was pony sport festival "Christal pony",
dressing-out with music. Vera Misailova with her Welsh pony presented the Phantom of the Opera. More information
and pictures as usual are on the special page.
12/31/2015 — 01/01/2016
